For Kennedy Masten, the 2024 Northern Virginia Swimming League season began as it ended last summer for the young Hamlet Green Feet’s standout, with victories in two races, one in record-setting fashion.
In that Division 3 June 15 all-McLean home meet against Kent Gardens pool, Masten won the 50-meter girls age 11-12 backstroke in 30.02 seconds and was first in the 11-12 butterfly in 30.79. Her time in the backstroke was a new league record, breaking the old mark of 30.06 set by Janet Hu from Mosby Woods pool in 2008.
Masten also swam on two relays during that June 15 meet, the winning 11-12 girls medley (1:07.62) and the second-place girls mixed-age freestyle unit. Vivian Steele, Alexandra Steber and Jamie Roth also swam on that winning relay.
Hamlet lost the meet, 255-164.
In her final meet last season for Hamlet, Masten won two races at the NVSL’s individual all-star competition, the girls age 11-12 freestyle in 28.44 and the 11-12 back in 31.62. She also won both races at the Division 3 divisional individual championships the week before.
