Great Falls, McLean and Vienna Little Leagues each held annual and well-attended opening-day ceremonies at their main multi-field complexes this past Saturday morning, with the usual parade of players and other fanfare and recognitions.

At the Great Falls event, Gov. Youngkin – a local resident – was on hand to throw out a first pitch and offer encouraging words to the league’s young baseball and softball players after many of the teams paraded onto the field at Nike Park.

As Youngkin threw his pitch, longtime league umpire Craig Cook stood behind the pitcher’s mound to make the ball, ball or strike. He later received the league’s Vic Price Volunteer of the Year Award.

Langley High School varsity baseball and softball teams were introduced as part of the ceremony. Youth singer Lucy Ludlow performed the National Anthem, and the tradition of the Great Falls Elementary School mascots running the bases continued.
