Comparing team scores against their one common opponent, the June 29 first-place showdown between undefeated and perennial Northern Virginia Swimming League Division 1 power Chesterbrook Tiger Sharks and Tuckahoe Tigers could be quite close.

The McLean rivals own 2-0 records heading into their 9 a.m. match at Chesterbrook, which could have a slight edge based on comparing those scores. Tuckahoe is the defending division champion, with Chesterbrook winning the 2022 title, then finishing third last summer.

In earlier matches against Division 1 newcomer Old Keene Mill this season, Chesterbrook won at home, 292-128. Tuckahoe’s won on the road, 264-156. Chesterbook swimmers won 29 individual races against Old Keene Mill, while Tuckahoe won 22.

In the relay races, Chesterbook won all six on the girls side, with Tuckahoe winning five. In the boys relays, Tuckahoe won four and Chesterbrook three.

Another comparison gauge are results from the June 26 Division 1 divisional relays, won by Tuckahoe with 216 points. Chesterbrook was second with 200. Tuckahoe won 10 relays in the meet and Chesterbrook four, with a number of seconds.

The winner of the June 29 dual meet will be in control of its destiny to claim the 2024 crown. However, each team still has to face the Overlee Flying Fish, also 2-0 in Division 1, of Arlington. Overlee finished second to Tuckahoe last summer.

Tuckahoe defeated Chesterbrook last season with the result revered in 2022.

NOTE: Chesterbrook, Overlee and Tuckahoe have combined to win the last 17 Division 1 championships – the Tiger Sharks winning eight, the Flying Fish seven and the Tigers two. Overlee’s last title was in 2015 . . . The Vienna Aquatic Club Gators, in 2005, were the last team other than those three to win the Division 1 crown. The Gators are in Division 4 this summer.
