On the afternoon of Aug. 19, a resident of the 100 block of Locust St., S.W., received a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be from the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, Vienna police said.

The caller told the woman that she had missed federal court and would have to pay a fine to avoid jail time, police said.

The caller had the resident remain on the phone while she went to her bank, withdrew money and paid him through Bitcoin transactions, police said.
