A woman living in the 900 block of Desale Street, S.W., told Vienna police on Feb. 19 at 9 a.m. that she had received a call from someone claiming to be from a local police department, and the caller-identification system displayed the correct number for the police department.

The caller stated there was an outstanding warrant for the resident and that she would need to make payment to take care of the issue.

The caller then transferred the resident to another number, where she was instructed to purchase gift cards and provide them with the numbers. After completing the transactions and providing the unknown caller with the card numbers, the resident went to the police department, where she found the call was a scam.
