James Madison High School students who park on a northern section of Carey Lane and hoof it to class to avoid having to buy school parking permits may need to find another place to park in the near future.

Fairfax County supervisors on June 25 were expected to set a public hearing on July 30 about expanding the Madison Residential Permit Parking District around the school.

Citing large numbers of Madison High School students parking on Carey Lane between Jerry Lane and Vale Road, residents have petitioned the county for inclusion within the school’s permit-parking area.

(Carey Lane south of Vale Road already is covered by the parking zone.)

Virginia code allows county supervisors to establish or expand such a parking district within a 2,000-foot walking distance of a high school’s entrances and/or 1,000 feet from property boundaries of an existing or proposed high school. But first, the board must receive a petition requesting establishment of such a parking district. The petition must be signed by people representing at least 60 percent of eligible addresses in the proposed district and more than 50 percent of residences on each block face of the district.

County staff have verified that the petitioning blocks are within the required distance from the school and its property lines, officials said.

If supervisors agree to expand the parking district to that section of Carey Lane, it will cost the county an estimated $1,125 to produce and install related signage.
