The Fairfax County government on June 20 opened the Monument Drive Commuter Parking Garage and Transit Center.

The facility features more than 820 parking spaces, charging stations for electric vehicles and facilities for bicyclists, along with eight bus bays and a pickup and drop-off area.

The opening was part of a broader initiative to expand and enhance the Fairfax Connector bus service.

Construction on the facility, which is located at the Government Center Parkway intersection next to Fairfax Corner, began in late 2021. The $43 million project was funded mostly by toll revenue collected by I-66 Express Mobility Partners and handed over to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

“This project is more than just a new garage; it provides improved accessibility to multi-modal transportation options, ultimately reducing congestion throughout the region,” said Monica Backmon, CEO of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, which funneled the toll revenue to the project.
