These are some of the 12 Fairfax County police officers who along with an explosive-detection canine are now in Paris assisting with security efforts at the Summer Olympic Games.

When the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris kicked off July 26, 12 Fairfax County police offices and an explosive-detection dog were among the throng of law-enforcement personnel ensuring the safety of athletes, staff and spectators alike.

“I am immensely proud to announce this prestigious opportunity for our officers to represent our community at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said in a statement announcing the team’s participation. “This opportunity showcases FCPD’s commitment to public safety both domestically and on a global stage.”

The Fairfax County officers were among those from just four U.S. law-enforcement agencies chosen by the French government to assist the French National Police. The others were the Los Angeles police department and sheriff’s office and the New York City Police Department.

The French government will cover all travel and lodging expenses, county police said.

County police will go on joint patrols with French forces to secure Olympic venues and tourist areas around the city.

Before leaving for Paris, the Fairfax County team underwent training in first aid and explosive-ordinance detection, received intelligence briefings and familiarized themselves with international police practices.

“The FCPD will gain innovative ideas and practices in combating crime and enhancing safety,” a department spokesman said.

Fairfax County police assigned the participants, including a Labrador retriever named Presley, from different divisions of the department.

“Each officer brings an array of experiences and professionalism and is a great representation of the department and community they serve,” said a spokesman, who added the team would return the week of Aug. 12.
