3 DEAD AFTER SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH IN FAIR OAKS: A single-vehicle crash July 23 in the Legato area of Fair Oaks killed three people, Fairfax County police said.
County police around 3:55 a.m. dispatched officers to the crash’s location at the overpass of West Ox Road and Route 29.
Preliminarily, detectives think the driver of a 2024 Acura Integra, Corey Rogers, 46, of Reston, was traveling southbound on West Ox Road when he failed to negotiate a turn and struck a cement Jersey wall. Rogers and two passengers, Angela Connor, 44, of Reston, and Salma Monastra, 35, of Herndon, all were declared deceased at the scene, police said.
Detectives think speed and narcotics were factors in the crash.
2 DOGS QUARANTINED AFTER BITING FOX IN VIENNA BACK YARD: A resident living in the 500 block of Valley St., S.E., told Vienna police on July 19 at 8:54 p.m. that her dog and a friend’s dog had encountered with a fox while playing in her back yard and had bitten the fox during the interaction.
The fox fled the scene shortly after the incident. The dogs subsequently were placed into a 10-day quarantine as a precautionary measure, police said.
VIENNA BUSINESS EMPLOYEE DEFRAUDED IN PHONE SCAM: An employee at Tobacco King & Vape, 332 Maple Ave., W., was the victim of significant financial fraud by an unidentified caller on July 20 between 9:20 and 11:55 a.m., Vienna police said.
VIENNA POLICE FIND WOMAN WHO ALLEGEDLY DEFECATED ON ROADSIDE: A person told Vienna police on July 24 between 5:50 and 5:55 p.m. that a woman defecating on the side of the road in the 200 block of Locust Street, S.E.
Officers responded to the scene and located the woman, police said.
VIENNA MAN CHARGED WITH PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS AFTER RESTAURANT INCIDENT: A Vienna police officer responded July 24 at 8:12 p.m. to the report of a man harassing employees at Wendy’s, 411 Maple Ave., E.
The officer located the man inside the restaurant and upon interacting with him detected signs of intoxication.
Officer Temple arrested the 51-year-old Vienna man and transported him to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where authorities charged with being drunk in public.
SHOPLIFTING REPORTED AT VIENNA CONVENIENCE STORE: An employee at Wawa, 465 Maple Ave., W., on July 25 at 11 p.m. reported a shoplifting incident that took place before Vienna police arrived.
VEHICLE TOTALED AFTER BEING HIT BY RED-LIGHT RUNNER IN VIENNA: A motorist was traveling northbound on Courthouse Road, S.W., with the green light on July 21 at 3:34 p.m. when the vehicle was hit by another whose driver was headed eastbound on Nutley Street, S.W., and ran a red light, Vienna police said.
The accident totaled the struck vehicle, police said.
CHAIN-LINK FENCE CUT AT DOMINION ENERGY SITE IN VIENNA: An employee at the Dominion Energy facility at 405 Center St., N., told Vienna police that sometime between July 9 and 23 someone had cut a segment of a chain-link fence at the site.
32 NEW FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE OFFICERS, 4 SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES GRADUATE FROM LATEST ACADEMY CLASS: The latest class to graduate from the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy included skilled college athletes, former military personnel, a pro gamer and others from diverse backgrounds, county police said July 25.
Session 86 is comprised of 32 newly sworn county police officers. Fifteen of the officers speak eight foreign languages, including Spanish, Nepali, Tigrinya, Vietnamese, German, Hokkien, Farsi and American Sign Language, police said. Eight are female.
Twenty of the recruits are college graduates and one obtained a master’s degree before starting a career with Fairfax County police.
Officers began 26 weeks of training at the academy Jan. 29 and graduated July 25. The academy consisted of basic instruction in the procedures, techniques and principles of law enforcement, incident-report writing, criminal law, traffic enforcement and first aid.
Officers also received training designed to help them build trust and positive relationships within their communities.
After graduation, officers will be assigned to one of the police department’s eight district stations and enter a 12-week field-training period. During this phase, officers will be paired with primary and secondary field-training instructors, who will evaluate them on the skills they learned in the academy.
In addition to the new police officers, the academy class included four Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
