The driver – later identified as a 33-year-old man from Haymarket – saw police and drove at a high rate of speed through a shopping center parking lot, almost striking several individuals, police said.

A second officer responding to the scene observed the suspect vehicle in the traffic circle at Locust and Park streets, S.E. The second officer followed the suspect onto Park Street, S.E., and alerted nearby motor officers to stop the vehicle.

The suspect’s vehicle eluded the motor officers and made a right turn onto Moore Avenue, S.E. An officer behind the suspect activated his emergency equipment and attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the suspect’s vehicle.

The officer followed until the suspect jumped from the moving vehicle, leaving it running with a female passenger inside, police said. The vehicle eventually stopped when it crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle.

Witnesses told police a male suspect had jumped several fences of different residences and attempted to enter these residences. An additional officer responding to the scene saw the suspect running through the front yard of a nearby home, police said. The officer ordered him to stop, but the suspect ignored the command.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect had six outstanding arrest warrants from the Prince William County Police Department and one from Fairfax County police.

Authorities have charged the suspect with felony eluding, two counts of felony destruction of property, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license (DUI-related)and two counts of attempted unlawful entry.

FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE WELCOME LARGEST ACADEMY CLASS IN NEARLY A DECADE: During a time when police staffing and applications for candidates to become police officers are at historic lows across the country, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) is fielding a record number of applications.

Police Chief Kevin Davis in late April welcomed 56 candidates starting their first day at the FCPD Academy. Session 84 is the largest academy class in almost 10 years and one of the most diverse classes ever.

“FCPD has focused its efforts in finding people with a passion to serve and a desire to make a difference in communities,” Davis said. “By streamlining our processes, and showing our future cops what FCPD is all about, we were able to make huge strides in this academy class.”

With the hiring challenges facing police departments across the nation, FCPD overhauled its recruiting-and-retention programs by streamlining the recruiting process without changing the hiring standards to ensure the department attracts the best candidates.

Session 84 is one of the most culturally diverse academy classes in department history. In October 2021, FCPD joined more than 100 other agencies in signing the “30 by 30” pledge, which aims to increase the representation of women in police recruit classes to 30 percent by 2030. Of the 56 new recruits in Session 84, 14 are women (25 percent). Since joining the initiative, FCPD has met or exceeded the 30-percent benchmark, resulting in an overall department representation of 29.7 percent women.

The FCPD Academy lasts 25 weeks and includes basic instruction in the procedures, techniques and principles of law enforcement, incident-report writing, criminal law, traffic enforcement and first aid.
