Yorktown softball team continues strong play with two more wins

Team has won six of seven against district opponents

The Yorktown Patriots continued their winning ways in girls softball with a big 4-3 road victory over the first-place McLean Highlanders in Liberty District action on May 3, then a 7-5 home victory over the Herndon Hornets two nights later.

The wins gave the high-school team a four-game winning streak and was McLean’s second setback in district in district play at the time.

Margaret Flannery-Goodman supplied the big blast with a three-run homer in the second inning against McLean.Kelly Chmiel scored the winning run in the sixth when she singled, was sacrificed to second by Zoe Brennan, then eventually scored on a passed ball.

Chmiel started on the mound and pitched six innings with seven strikeouts. Samantha Parker pitched the seventh, and with the tying run on second, recorded a strikeout to end the game.

The pitching was the same against Herndon, with Chmiel starting and going six innings and Parker working the seventh.

With the bat, Kaiya Ovando had two hits and two RBI with a walk; Chmiel had two hits; Mckenna Gurgo had two hits, three RBI and a steal; Sophia Giambalvo had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly; and Malena Cardinale and Zoe Brennan singled. Brennan also had a key sacrifice bunt.

With the wins, Yorktown upped its district record to 6-5 and improved its overall mark to 12-7.

The Patriots lost their first four district games this season and have since bounced back to win six of their last seven against league rivals.
