Yorktown senior chosen MVP of track and field meet

Athlete won two hurdle races and the high jump

By winning three events and setting a school record in the process, Yorktown High School senior Peter Oliveira was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the Cassel’s XBC Track Experience boys meet at Chantilly High.

Oliveira won the high-jump at 6-feet, 2-inches, was first in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.89 seconds and won the 300 hurdles in a school-record time of 39.25.

His effort helped the Yorktown boys finish fourth with 40 points. Alexandria City won with 77.5.

Also for the Yorktown boys, shot putter Colin McCormack finished third (45-11) and Jack Levine was fourth in the 1,600 (4:28.2).

For the Bishop O’Connell boys in the meet, Samson Ogunade won the shot put at 48-41/2 and Anthony Lenzini was ninth in the 1,600 (4:33.0).

In the girls meet, Yorktown finished ninth and was led by a second from Sofia Sheldon in the 1,600 (5:14.28) and a fourth from Eleanor Whitehouse in the same race (5:21.44).

Also for Yorktown, Ellen Malloy was fifth in the 800 (2:23.27) and Kaiya Ovando was fifth in the shot put (30-1).

For the O’Connell girls, Molly Weithman was second in the 3,200 (11:10.
