Using different lineups, the Yorktown Patriots enjoyed some strong finishes in their first two tournaments of the 2024 high-school golf season.

With a 323 team score in the 18-hole event, Yorktown finished fifth at the 20-team fourth-annual Don Roth Memorial Warhawk Invitational tournament at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton.

Maddie Cameron shot 76 to lead Yorktown, Jack Freeman had a 79, Luke Sanne 83, Ginger Beall 85 and Roger Allenbaugh 86.

A day later, at Yorktown’s own Patriot Invitational at Bristow Manor Golf Club in Prince William County, the team tied for second with the Wakefield Warriors with a 309 total. Western Albemarle of Charlottesville won the 16-team tourney with a 306 score.

Cameron had the lowest score with a 73. Freeman shot 76, Austin Barbieri 79, Ryan Pericak 81 and Nick Senkus 83.

Cameron and Freeman were the only two who played both tournaments.

“It’s early, so we used different lineups to allow more to play,” Yorktown coach Chris Williams said. “The players at our tournament had a little more experience.”

At the 11th annual Patriot Invitational, Centreville’s Timothy Yi had the lowest individual score with a 69, with Gaineville High’s Jack Schimler shooting 71 to finish second. Cameron had one of the lowest scores by a girl.

The next competition for Yorktown is McLean High School’s George Pavlis tournament on Aug. 12, then the three-team Arlington County meet against Wakefield and the Washington-Liberty Generals on Aug. 14. Yorktown is the defending county champion.
