The host Yorktown Patriots girls lacrosse team extended its winning streak to 16 games and progressed to the upcoming Class 6 state tournament after a dominant 17-5 victory over the South Lakes Seahawks in the championship game of the 6D North Region tournament.
The final score was 17-5 the night of May 24 in Arlington. The region high-school crown was the first for Yorktown, which has also won district and Class 6 state tournaments in program history.
In this season's region final, the Patriots (17-1) never let the Seahawks lead. When South Lakes scored its first goal, Yorktown responded with 10 of its own.
While Yorktown’s offense took over the game, the defense deserved a moment in the spotlight, as well. That unit played with aggression and strength.
Yorktown completely took over the second quarter, keeping possession of the ball almost the entire 12 minutes.
In the second half, Yorktown maintained at least a nine-goal lead.
“It was so much fun. I think that we have such a good team dynamic and we work together, and I think that’s what is leading us to all these victories,” Yorktown player Delaney Sinton said.
Yorktown coach Jenny Keimig said the Patriots executed their game plan in the region final, as they have throughout the season.
“Today’s goal was to win our program’s first-ever region title,” Keimig said. “Before the game, we went into the gym and we were looking at all the banners in the gym and the only banner Yorktown girls lacrosse had never won was a regional title. So I told them to come out with heart and intentions today and we got the job done. That was very special, to make program history.”
Leading Yorktown in scoring was Libby LaPierre with four goals and two assists. Coco Rigoli also netted four goals. Lila Almy had three goals and Olivia Stafford two. Mairin Almy, Mia DeFalco and Olivia Burgeson each had one goal. Burgeson had one assist.
Yorktown begins play in the Class 6 state tournament on May 31.
