Yorktown girls cross country team finishes fourth in big meet

Patriots will run in upcoming Arlington County championships

The Yorktown High School girls cross country team placed fourth at a meet in Pennsylvania.

With five runners finishing among the top 85, the Yorktown Patriots placed fourth in the girls combined race at the Carlisle Invitational high-school cross country meet in Pennsylvania.

Yorktown’s highest finisher in the Sept. 30 race, which included hundreds of runners, was senior Sofia Sheldon. She was 46th in 20:11.

Patriots’ senior Eleanor Whitehouse was next at 48th in 20:16. Yorktown’s other three runners who counted in the team scoring were junior Ellen Malloy in 49th (20:17), junior Ella Dunn in 78th (20:49) and freshman Ali Mathews in 83rd (20:52). 

Also, junior Sofi Keppler was 93rd in 21:02.

In the boys combined meet, Yorktown finished 26th, led by a 65th from senior Roman Steis (17:00).

The Yorktown teams will be participating in the annual Arlington County meet on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Bluemont Park. The meet will consist of two races, a girls varsity race and a boys meet, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Bishop O’Connell Knights will be the other three teams participating. The Yorktown teams are the defending champions.

O’Connell’s Molly Weithman is the defending girls champion at the county meet. She placed 14th (20:40) on Sept. 30 in the girls varsity race at the Glory Days Grill Invitational  at Bull Run Regional Park. Sheldon was second in last year’s county meet.
