Next up is the state-championship match for the Yorktown Patriots.
The girls lacrosse team advanced to the Virginia High School League Class 6 tournament final with a dominating 14-2 semifinal victory over the host Battlefield Bobcats on June 4 in Haymarket. The victory was the 19th in a row this spring for the Patriots (20-1), who already have won Liberty District and 6D North Region tournament crowns.
In the June 8 state final at 12:30 p.m. at Deep Run High near Richmond, Yorktown will face the Robinson Rams, the only team that has defeated the Patriots this season. That came on March 15 by an 8-7 score in Yorktown’s second game, when the Patriots were missing some key players. Yorktown has not lost since. Robinson is 19-3 with 11 straight victories.
The state-tournament appearance is Yorktown’s third, all under head coach Jenny Keimig. The first was in 2019 when the Patriots lost in the semifinals to Madison, then in 2022 when Yorktown won the championship with a 3-0 record.
“That should be a great rematch,” Keimig said about the state final.
In its semifinal win, Yorktown led 4-1 after one quarter, 8-2 at halftime, then 11-2 after three. Battlefield (16-6) did not score in the second half, as its 11-match winning streak was snapped.
On defense for Yorktown, starting goalie Victoria Carcillo and Kelly Brown combined for the win.
The Patriots controlled the match and possession of the ball by winning 82 percent of the draw controls.
Olivia Stafford scored four goals and caused five turnovers for Yorktown. Helene Lydon and Corinne Rigoli scored three goals each, Lila Almy had two and Mairin Almy and Olivia Burgeson (one assist) one each. Mila Perez had two assists and Elizabeth LaPierre one. LaPierre, Emme Yoder and Riley Demory each caused two turnovers.
NOTE: Entering the state final, Yorktown has won five straight state-tournament matches and has a 6-1 overall record in the competition.
