Yorktown baseball team has a winning week with two victories

Patriots improve Liberty-District leading record to 5-0

With a strong hitting, pitching and defensive effort, the Yorktown Patriots defeated the host Herndon Hornets, 8-1, April 15 to remain in sole possession of first place in the Liberty District at 5-0.

Yorktown (8-4 overall) had 10 hits, including the seventh homer this season by Trevor McAndrews and stole eight bases in the high-school baseball game.

“We are playing well and we have to keep doing what we can do,” Yorktown coach John Skaggs said.

McAndrews (16 RBI this season) gave Yorktown a 2-0 first-inning lead with his homer.

Jack Rucker and Ryan Powers each had two hits. Powers and Thomas Koomey had two-run doubles and Bradley Labant an RBI single. Rucker, Labant and Kyle Langley each stole two bases.

Grayson McCarthy started on the mound and pitched five innings of three-hit ball to get the win. Yorktown pitchers did not allow an earned run.

In an earlier non-district road game, Yorktown defeated the Westfield Bulldogs, 6-4, taking a 4-2 second-inning lead and hanging on. McAndrews, who will play at Emory University in Atlanta, had two hits, including his sixth homer.

Also for Yorktown, Powers and John Sharkey each had two-run singles and Owen Woodward had two hits.

Koomey started on the mound and got the win with James Pilot and Sharkey pitching in relief.

• In the Washington-Liberty Generals 3-0 Liberty District loss to the Herndon Hornets, Jack Couture started and struck out nine in 52/3 innings and had a hit with the bat. Sean Guffey and Jake Guffey had W-L’s other two hits.

 Washington-Liberty next played Meridian in non-district action and lost, 7-4. For the Generals, Sean Guffey doubled and had two hits and two RBI, Alex Frymoyer doubled and had an RBI and Luke Harnishfeger doubled. The Generals had eight hits.

On the mound, Will Thompson and Jack Keane each struck out five and Luke Schwarz fanned three. Thompson pitched two innings.
