Wakefield wrestler wins girls tournament, remains undefeated

Of junior grappler's 14 victories, 13 are by pin

Wakefield High School junior Cameron Millsapps continued her undefeated season in girls wrestling by winning the 152-pound female weight class at the recent Battle of the Bridge tournament.

Millsapps, a first-year wrestler, was 3-0 in the competition at Woodbridge High School with two pins, then a 7-3 decision in the championship match over Yorktown’s Charlotte Bowman.

For the season, Millsapps’ overall record is 14-0 with 13 pins. The match against Bowman was the first full 6-minute match she has wrestled this season.

Bowman has been a top wrestler for two seasons for Yorktown. She was 1-1 in the tournament, with a first-round bye then an 8-4 win in her other match.

Girls wrestling became an official Virginia High School League varsity sports last season. Bowman finished sixth in the state at 156 pounds last season, with a 4-2 record and three pins.

“This is incredibly impressive what Cameron is doing this season in her first year,” Wakefield wrestling coach John Leinberger said. “Girls wrestling is new and this is great for the sport.”

Millsapps won a previous girls tournament this season hosted by Wakefield. She hopes to participate in a couple of more meets before the VHSL’s Girls State Open tournament.

“She has to be considered a state contender,” Leinberger said.

Prior to joining Wakefield’s wrestling team this season, Millsapps has been a longtime gymnasts, competing the last two years at the state and regional levels for the Arlington Aeriels program, and has been a team captain for the last several years.

In the boys competition at the Battle of the Bridge, Yorktown’s Cambyses Khani finished fourth at 113 and his teammate, Telmuun Byambajargal was sixth at 190.
