His one season playing varsity high-school boys basketball in Arlington wrapped up with a big honor for Carlton Young.
The senior forward for the Wakefield Warriors recently was chosen to the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 first team.
Young and his family moved to Arlington last summer and he joined the Wakefield team and helped the Warriors win a Liberty District championship, compile a 21-5 record and reach the semifinals of the 6D North Region tournament.
He averaged 18.6 points per game, 8.9 rebounds, shot 61.6 percent from the floor and had multiple double-doubles for points and rebounds during games.
Young was the only player from the Liberty District to be chosen all-state.
In addition to making all-state, Young was chosen as the district’s Player of the Year, was selected first-team all-region, and made the all-tournament team at Wakefield’s George Long holiday tourney in late December.
Young will play in college, but that school has not yet been determined.
Young was Wakefield’s first player chosen first-team all-state since Amari Cooper in 2018, Alan Treakle in 2017 and Dominique Tham in 2014 and 2015.
• In boys Division I state private-school basketball, Bishop O’Connell senior Bryson Tucker was chosen first-team all-state. He also was selected to first-team in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.
Making second team all-WCAC from O’Connell was senior guard Jadyn Harris, with senior A.J. Swinton and junior Tim Walker chosen honorable mention.
