With a third in the long jump and seventh in the 100-meter dash, Wakefield Warriors’ sophomore Chris Gilpin was a top finisher among participants from Arlington schools at the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 boys and girls state championship track and field meets.
Gilpin leaped 23-feet,1 3/4-inches in the boys long jump and ran 10.99 in the 100. The winning jump was 24-6 and the winning time in the 100 was 10.58.
Also for the Wakefield boys, Ben Chapuis was eighth in the long jump and Travon Buckner eighth in the triple jump.
Washington-Liberty High junior and 6D North Region champion Charles Gent leaped 13-6 to place seventh in the boys pole vault. The winning jump with 16-feet. At the region meet, Gent won with a jump and 13-9.
In the girls state meet, Wakefield’s Kenedy Shields was fourth in the high jump, eighth in the 100, 12th in the long jump and competed in the 200 but did not make the finals.
Also for the Wakefield girls, the 4x800 relay finished fourth and Hosanna Connor was sixth in the pole vault. The relay consisted of Quincy Daigle, Addison Young, A.J. Jordan and Eulalia Sarli.
For the Yorktown High School girls, Marin McCormack was fifth in the 400, Sofia Sheldon sixth in the 1,600 and Kaiya Ovando ninth in the discus.
The 4x800 relay for the Washington-Liberty girls placed seventh and Amela Male was 10th in the shot put and 11th in the discus. The relay was made up of Emily Buckwalter, Alba Edsall, Kate Floom and Therese Johansson.
