Holy Mackerels win big; Squids lose in opening summer swim meets

Knights of Columbus won every individual freestyle race

Arlington Knights of Columbus swimmers are among those starting a boys race during the team's opening meet on June 17.

Leading the defending Red Division champion Knights of Columbus Holy Mackerels in their 269-182 opening-week victory over the Ashburn Village Aqua Jets in Colonial Swimming League action June 17 were triple race winners Will Coleman, Mac Marsh, Kasper Parfomak and Sedona Springer and double winners Arriam Gebre, Mary Hecmanczuk, Brianna Jordan, Walker Moore and Elizabeth Pilot.

Single winners were Julia Fairchild, Azmera Gebre, Scarlet Gray, Durward Kuhlman, Aubrey Larson, Ryan Pedone and Summer Springer.

Springer took down the girls 8-and-under breaststroke record from 2001 with a time of 23.37.

The Holy Mackerels set a tone early in the meet by winning every individual freestyle race. At the end, the team won eight of 13 relays.

• The Fort Myer Squids lost their opening-season White Division meet in Colonial Swimming League action by a 285-165 score to host Ashburn Farms on June 17.

 Zachary Berner won four races for Fort Myer, Daniel Ramos won three and Paxton Nguyen-Viet, Diego Ramos and Clara McCarthy won two each. Single winners were Harrison Holt, Liv Wuellner, Maya Ramos, Sasha Taylor and William McCarthy.
