The high-school golf season begins for local teams this week.

The high-school golf season gets started in early August with three local teams hosting multi-team tournaments on different days and courses.

The Madison Warhawks start first, hosting the fourth annual Don Roth Warhawk Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 9 a.m. at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton.

A day later, on Aug. 7 at 10 a.m., the Yorktown Patriots host their 11th annual Patriots Invitational, this year played at Bristow Manor Golf Club in Prince William County.

Lastly, the McLean Highlanders host the annual George Pavlis Memorial Tournament on Aug. 12 at 9 a.m. at Hidden Creek Country Club in Reston.

Many teams in the GazetteLeader’s coverage areas will be participating in those  three tournaments.

The Don Roth event will have 16 teams, including locals Madison, Langley, Yorktown, Oakton and Marshall.

Ryan Moseley, Colin Park, Jack Cilman, Sohan Mehta and Ashlyn Choi will be Madison’s top players.

Yorktown’s event will have 12 or 13 teams this season, down from a high of 24 in past years.

The tourney was held at the 1757 Golf Club near Sterling the past three seasons. Along with Yorktown, McLean and Marshall are entered. Also included are Western Albemarle High near Charlottesville and Colonial Forge of Prince William County.

“We have a good mix of teams again,” Yorktown coach and tournament director Chris Williams said.

Top returning players for Yorktown are Nick Senkus, Austin Barbieri, Luke Sanne and Jack Freeman.

The George Pavlis competition will have 18 teams, including the host and other locals Marshall, Oakton and Yorktown.

McLean’s top returning players are J.T. Deevy, Lauren Wood and Kyle Li.

A number of other tournaments are held during the early part of August. After that, teams begin their dual-match schedules mid-month.

Yorktown plays in the annual three-team Arlington County match against Wakefield and Washington-Liberty on Aug. 14 at East Potomac Park Golf Course in D.C.

District tournaments for all three schools  are held in late September.
