Editorial: Stop pretending Md., Va. Senate races are competitive

Like it or not, Republican nominees in Virginia, Maryland are guaranteed losers given current climate

There are many serious local issues the region’s press could and should be covering in coming months. And to free up staff time, we’d suggest those other outlets stop pretending that the Maryland U.S. Senate race is going to be a nail-biter.

Republican nominee Larry Hogan is a favorite of the press because he’s a Trump-hating moderate. But his chances of winning in November are, including the obligatory 3% margin of error, approximately negative 3%. It’s not going to happen.

For the record, the Virginia Senate race, no matter the Republican contender, also will not be competitive. Incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine may not be loved, but always squeaks by. Alas for Kaine – who had things worked out differently in November 2016 reasonably might be the Democratic nominee for president this year – he seems stuck in the Senate forever.
