Editorial: FCPS superintendent too invested in Hayfield brouhaha

Not everyone is buying what Michelle Reid is selling on football situation

Kind of out of our coverage area, but we can’t help but note how odd it seems that Fairfax County Superintendent Michelle Reid has gone all in when it comes to professing her faith that there’s nothing to see in concerns raised about the football program at Hayfield Secondary School.

The contretemps involves a coach newly arrived from Prince William County and the residency of some of the players on this year’s varsity squad. The bigger question, though, is why Reid has been so invested and taking the lead to pronounce that the matter has been fully investigated, there’s nothing to see and the public needs to pipe down.

Even if everything at Hayfield is being done within the rules (despite the stench of shadiness surrounding it), the superintendent’s I’m-at-the-top-and-know-best behavior is a calamitous PR strategy. And as some of her predecessors have learned the hard way, the knives are ALWAYS out for the head of Fairfax’s school system, waiting for a misstep.
