Arlington County Board members removed these items from their consent agenda, and will hold public hearings on them at their evening meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17:

[Original coverage, Sept. 12:]

Arlington County Board members on Sept. 14 are slated to ink an agreement that will, if funding commitments from outside groups are met, result in two sports fields at Kenmore Middle School being converted from natural to synthetic turf.

Board members are expected to authorize memorandums of understanding between the county government and the Arlington Soccer Association and Arlington Sports Foundation. Those two groups have promised to raise and contribute $1 million each in support of the $10.1 million project.

The county government will spend about $5.4 million for the project, while the school system will kick in the remainder.

As part of the agreement, those who contribute major amounts to the two non-profit organizations in support of the effort will be able to receive certain benefits, including in some cases logos on the fields. (Naming rights are not, however, on the table.)

The county government’s Sports Commission is supportive of the arrangement, although county leaders have given themselves an out – if the groups cannot raise the funds under specified timelines, the projects could be canceled.

At present there is no date for a start of construction.
