On Jan. 8 at 10:16 a.m., a man entered a business in the 1200 block of South Hayes Street, collected merchandise and allegedly left without payment, Arlington police said.

The suspect fled to the nearby Pentagon City Metro station, where responding officers located him. The suspect disregarded police commands and fled onto the tracks, which resulted in temporary suspension of train service, police said.

The suspect exited the train tracks at the Crystal City Metro station, where he was taken into custody.

The suspect – 37-year-old Alvern Harris of the District of Columbia – was arrested and charged with petty larceny in the initial incident and with trespassing on a railroad track and failure to pay fares in connection with his escapades in the Metro system.
