Arlington County government 55+ programs are held indoors at 55+ Centers unless otherwise noted. A membership (starting at $20 annually) is required to participate.

September is Hispanic Heritage Month, and there will be a number of events at Arlington County 55+ centers commemorating it.

Seasoned citizens will pair up with preschool students at Lubber Run Community Center on Monday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. to read stories from books provided by teachers. [Registration #911301-12] A similar event will be held at the center on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. [Registration #911301-13].

• The 55+ Travel group will head to Richmond to enjoy the “Apollo: When We Went to the Moon” exhibition at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The cost is $28 for Arlington residents, $32 for others. [Registration #902309-03]

Arlington Neighborhood Village executive director Wendy Zenker will discuss the organization’s purpose of allowing senior adults to stay in their homes on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Lubber Run 55+ Center. [Registration #911400-01 for in-person, #911400-02 online]

• A guide to apps focused on plants and birds, and instruction on how to use them in natural surroundings, will represented by volunteers from Arlington Regional Master Naturalists on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at Walter Reed 55+ Center. [Registration #911403-02]

• Aurora Hills 55+ Center hosts a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with a cooking demonstration featuring plantains on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. [Registration #911501-01]

• An interactive program focusing on the challenges and myths surrounding mental health and aging will bet resented on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Aurora Hills 55+ Center. [Registration #911500-05]

• Elder-law attorney Ed Zetlin will discuss the basics of estate planning on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. online. [Registration #911404-02]

• A safety expo to mark September as Fall Prevention Month will be held on Friday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at Lubber Run 55+ Center. Open to the public, the event is sponsored by the Office of 55+ Programs, VHC Health (Virginia Hospital Center) and the Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance. [Registration #911804-05]

• An open dance featuring Latin music will be presented on Friday, Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Arlington Mill 55+ Center. Salsa, bachata, rumba, cha-cha-cha and merengue will be feature. No partner is needed. [Drop-in; no registration required]
