GOP memo to Elon Musk: Send campaign cash to Arlington

Arlington GOP chair says tech billionaire could make a difference at local level

The chairman of the Arlington County Republican Committee would like a word with Elon Musk.

After the tech billionaire announced plans to spend $45 million a month of his own money in support of a political-action committee backing Donald Trump, local GOP head Matthew Hurtt had a request.

“We’d like to talk to you,” Hurtt posted on social media from Milwaukee, where he was attending the Republican National Convention.

His ask? Moolah for local Republican efforts.

“$10,000 could go a lot further in Arlington than $45 million elsewhere,” he wrote, adding a link to the local party’s fund-raising page in case Musk was interested.

Arlington Republicans have ramped up fund-raising efforts this year, but continue to significantly lag the county’s dominant Democrats.

Arlington Republicans are unlikely to see much traction in November’s County Board election, where Democrat J.D. Spain Sr. is the likely winner. But any extra votes the party turns out in the county could help in the presidential race, where, in Virginia, Donald Trump and President Biden (if Biden survives as the Democratic standard-bearer) currently are polling neck and neck.
