The Arlington County Democratic Committee in August will begin the process of recruiting more than 700 volunteers to staff Arlington’s 54 precincts on Election Day.

The party aims to have two or more volunteers at all precincts throughout the voting period, which will run from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Party officials gave a preview of their plans at the organization’s July meeting.

Democrats typically are able to provide blanket coverage of precincts on Election Day, and to provide personnel for early voting at satellite centers during peak times. The party rank-and-file hand out sample ballots and make a last effort to woo voters.

Arlington Republicans also have staffing at precincts, but generally at a more reduced level. The GOP has not yet unveiled its plans for the Nov. 5 election.

While Democrats have won Virginia’s 13 electoral votes each of the last four presidential elections, polls suggest the commonwealth is very much in play for 2024.

Arlington, however, will remain a Democratic bastion, with perhaps the only question being whether Donald Trump can best the 17 percent of the vote he received in both the 2016 and 2020 races.

The last Republican presidential candidate to win the Arlington vote was Ronald Reagan in 1980.
