Arlington School Board members on July 8 authorized the school system’s chief operating officer, John Mayo, to substitute for Superintendent Francisco Durán over the coming year during any absence from board meetings and public hearings.

The vote was part of a series of housekeeping items at the School Board’s organizational meeting.

Also at the meeting, the School Board authorized Mayo, assistant superintendents Catherine Ashby and Andy Hawkins, chief academic officer Gerald Mann and chief of school support Kimberley Graves to substitute for Durán in signing documentation required by the Virginia Department of Education.

All previously had been authorized to do so, and can continue to do so through Aug. 1, 2025.

(Note to state education officials: The form school systems are required to fill out includes the phrase “country, city or town” followed by a blank to be filled in with a locality’s name. Pretty sure that should be “county, city or town.”)
