Members of the USS Arlington crew took part in the 2024 Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff 9/11 Memorial 5K Run.

Officers and crew of the USS Arlington visited Arlington and on Sept. 7 participated in the 2024 Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff 9/11 Memorial 5K Run, where the ship’s contingent finished first in the “military teams” category.

The ship’s commander, U.S. Navy Capt. Ian Scaliantine, addressed the crowd and spoke of the honor it was for the USS Arlington sailors to participate in the race. USS Arlington crew members not only competed, but also participated in the joint Honor Guard and awarded finishing medals to runners.

The visit was sponsored by the USS Arlington Community Alliance, which works to maintain a link between the USS Arlington and 9/11 family members, first-responders on 9/11, and the Arlington community.

The non-profit alliance supports the USS Arlington in a number of ways, such as awards for Sailors of the Quarter and Sailors of the Year; CARE packages during deployments; and hosting visits to Arlington.

The USS Arlington is a landing platform dock (LPD) designed to speed U.S. Marines to world hot spots and on humanitarian missions. The third ship in modern Navy history to carry the name “Arlington,” it is one of a family of three LPDs named to honor the communities most impacted by the 2001 terrorist attacks and to commemorate the work of first-responders in Arlington, New York City and Somerset, Pa.
