An educator at Arlington’s Barrett Elementary School is one of three statewide announced as finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Laurie Sullivan, a Project Discovery science/STEM teacher at the school, is now in the running for the award, regarded as the nation’s top honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics teachers.

Educators from Goochland County and the city of Martinsville also were named finalists from the Old Dominion. The finalists were selected by review committees convened by the Virginia Department of Education.

“I am proud to recognize and honor three Virginia teachers who have been selected,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons. “We are proud to have them represent the commonwealth as they are considered by the national selection committee.”

That committee will review the applications of the 2024 state finalists, and the winners of the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching will be announced by the White House.
