Jack Nash of Arlington was named the 2024 grand-prize writer winner in the 40th annual Writers of the Future L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards Gala in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, held April 25 at the Taglyan Cultural Complex in Hollywood.

Nash had been one of a dozen finalists from across the globe. In the week prior to the black-tie gala, finalists were mentored in seminars led by contest judges in an effort to prepare them for their respective professions.

“All of the stories are so good; I wasn’t expecting to be the one to win,” Nash said, calling the competition “the fuel for science-fiction and fantasy writers.”

In the 40 years of the Writers of the Future Contest, there have been 559 winners and finalists. The past winners of the writing contest have published 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories, and 16 winners have a combined 41 New York Times bestselling books.

Nash was honored alongside Tyler Vail of Bryan, Texas, who came out on top in the 35th annual Illustrators of the Future competition. The competitions are overseen by Author Services Inc. and Galaxy Press.
